Gaana BMP Delhi Review: Over 30,000 in Attendance Revel in the Magic of Bollywood

Before we plunge into a deep-dive analysis, allow me to declare it at the outset itself that the ‘Bollywood Music Project’ (BMP), by Event Capital and TM Talent Management is one of my favorite music festival properties in the country right now. The simple reason being that while there are almost a dozen event properties that are thriving on the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) frenzy, there have been practically zero music festivals created for the billions in the country who love Bollywood music.

It is almost astonishing when you realize how the event industry has never seriously tried to capture on this enormous business opportunity as globally too, India is recognized primarily, as the nation that churns out almost 1000 Bollywood Movies annually featuring the best of song & dance. Clearly, the custodians at BMP deserve all the praises in the world for firstly attempting to create a spectacle out of the premise and then bonus points for its absolute knockout execution.  

Anyone who entered the Gaana Bollywood Music Project on January 27 & 28, 2018 at the JLN Stadium in New Delhi felt at ease from the get-go. The property was undoubtedly bigger this year with an expanded F&B space, brand activations, experiential zones and a more interesting artist lineup that headlined that festival. Another interesting fact to be noted is that BMP (unlike other music festivals) was in fact, a family event. For every youngster who danced and cheered to Urban Punjabi, there was also an elderly couple that clapped and hummed along to all-time classic melodies.

Gates of the festival opened sharp at 2 PM and while day 1 of the magnificent music festival witnessed eclectic performances by the likes Farhan Live, Sachin-Jigar, Asees Kaur, Divya Kumar, Mohammed Irfan, Raftaar, Guru Randhawa and others, day 2 saw incredible performers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Benny Dayal, Shalmali Kolghade, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Nooran sisters taking over.

One of the biggest highlights of the festival this year was the special tribute performance for AR Rehman by the artists like Charu Semwal, Harish Moyal, Shashi Suman and Shuchismita Das. Another high for BMP this year was the collaboration of Aditi Singh Sharma, Anusha Mani, Shilpa Rao and Shruti Pathak who came together to perform a special gig called Woomaniya which celebrated the woman power of the music industry.

Coming to technical aspects of staging and production, it is to be noted that Bollywood Music Project custodians left no stone unturned to serve the festival audiences 2 unforgettable days of larger than life musical entertainment. While the sound setup was top notch and stage structure was mammoth, it was the interesting use of lights and pyros that further elevated the experiential quotient of all artist performances.

To sum it up, the Delhi edition of Gaana Bollywood Music Project has given the right kickstart to the year 2018. Everyone who walked out of the stadium post the festival had brimming smiles on their faces which speaks volumes about what the festival has achieved in merely 3 editions. Clearly, Bollywood Music Fans have a destination they can call their own now and BMP is on a massive tremendous growth trajectory as they continue to build on a loyal audience base owing to their exceptional organizing and execution capabilities.
