Universal Events 117 Live PopCon Dubai Outlet Mall UAE
Universal Events and 117 Live, Al Ahli Holding Group’s newest subsidiaries brought PopCon to Dubai for the first time. The largest pop-culture festival of its kind globally, PopCon Dubai took place from October 27 to 29 in a purpose built state-of-the-art complex at the Dubai Outlet Mall.
PopCon was a three day extravaganza that included every element of pop culture by fusing the comic and pop world genres together with lifestyle trends from: movies and television to comics and games, beauty and fashion to health and fitness as well as digital and social media platforms, music, sport, children’s play zone, F&B, anime and the cosplay competition. Furthermore, PopCon played host to top celebrities from diverse industries, including international studios such as Marvel, Disney and San Rio, who interacted with the audience and provided a unique pop-culture carnival experience. These included Theo Rossi, Randy Couture, Brianna Hildebrand, Giuliana Rancic, ChrisspyMakeup, Etienne Ortega, Fouz al Fahad, Whilce Portacio, Jason Palmer, David Yardin, Agnes Garbowska, Miranda Davidson Studios, Wahid Jalal and more.
Talking about how 117 Live and Universal Events collaborated to produce PopCon in Dubai, Thomas Ovesen, CEO, 117 Live said, “Both companies are part of Al Ahli Group and our colleagues at the Singapore-based Universal Events took care of the curation of PopCon whilst the 117 Live team produced the event from A-Z.”
On why Dubai was ideal for PopCon Dubai, Mohammed Khammas, CEO, Al Ahli Holding Group said, “Given our choices of where to build our new branded event, Dubai presented itself as the perfect city to host PopCon with its wonderful mix of cultures and thus diverse interests in pop culture.”
Anchoring PopCon was the first Hallowen-themed festival “Fiesta De Los Muertos” or Festival of the Dead, that took place on October 28, where attendants showed up their favourite hero or villain.
Both festivals brought together some of the biggest Hollywood stars and music acts in the world. With a program comprising of live concerts, performances, special appearances, workshops and talks with some of most well respected and renowned names and brands in each field, PopCon was an all-inclusive experience for fans, families and visitors of all ages and interests, with something for everyone.
On the response to the event, Ovesen added, “Launching not only PopCon Dubai, but also the new Beautyfest brand over the same weekend as the 117-Live-owned new annual Fiesta De Los Muertos festival put our teams to the test, but all events were well executed and fans attending PopCon, whether cos players, comic fans, pop culture interested or of course beauty and fashion lovers seem to have found something they liked as the overall feedback has been very good. Doing the event as a mall takeover might soon be rendered too ambitious due to capacity and we would certainly need to look at bigger facilities next year when we intend to run the events again, but with more content and curation applied to all the various elements now that the market better understand what the DNA is of this pop culture event!”
