Bharat Petroleum Corporation celebrated its 40th Foundation Day with great panache at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. It was a momentous occasion. To commemorate the occasion, BPCL instituted The Energising Bharat Awards to recognise unsung heroes. The digital and creative partner of the awards was Mirum, a member of the WPP Group. Open Media Network was the knowledge and management partner of the awards. The entire process was independently audited by KPMG in India. The event was managed to perfection by Wizcraft Entertainment.
Every little detail was worked upon and during the dress rehearsal, every crease ironed out. I always find myself delivering an apt performance with the Wizcraft team. The support they render to an artist enables one to focus only and only on the job at hand. Together, we delivered a heady, feel-good show that engaged, entertained and emotionally moved everyone seated in the auditorium.
Gracing the occasion were Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas; Kapil Dev Tripathi, Petroleum Secretary; S. Varadarajan, Chairman and Managing Director, BPCL; Shaina NC, politico; the senior level management of BPCL; channel partners; and other guests.
The evening began with a rendition of Ganesh Vandana by accomplished Bharatnatyam danseuse Sudha Chandran. This was followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The opening act exalted the deeds of Lord Krishna as a tribute to the winners of The Energising Bharat Awards. This performance was presented by the Prince Dance Group.
The awards were then presented. On December 24, 2015, BPCL had kicked off a campaign inviting nominations to shortlist deserving candidates who have been working silently behind the scenes in the areas of Rural Health, Water Conservation, Primary Education, Women Empowerment and Skill Development. Nominations ended at midnight on January 6, 2016, with 932 stellar nominations received. These entries were then scored and shortlisted by an independent, interim jury before being validated by KPMG. Jury members included Syeda Imam, former Member of the Minorities Commission; Dr Parasuraman, Director, Tata Institute of Social Sciences; Bibek Debroy, Member, NITI Aayog; Anshu Gupta, Founder, Goonj; and J. Dinaker, Executive Director - Audit, Bharat Petroleum. The winners, across all the categories, were awarded a citation each and a cash reward of INR 2.5 lakh.
Sudha Chandran then performed the BPCL Act depicting Bharat Petroleum’s journey. The BPCL Anthem was also launched on the occasion. The evening touched a crescendo with Shiamak Davar’s Victory Arts Foundation performing the Victory on Wheels Dance, that saw a mixed group of individuals on wheelchairs, crutches, callipers, some afflicted with Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Apert syndrome and Polio, perform with gusto.
I am glad I was a part of an evening that saluted these citizens of India, who by their deeds, keep the foremost human quality of compassion, alive.
