Mahindra announces second edition of Mahindra Youth Football Challenge

Mahindra Group, in association with Procam International, launched the second edition of the Mahindra Youth Football Challenge (MYFC) at a press conference on Sept. 21 at Media Cube, Mahindra Towers, Mumbai. The second edition will be played in the same format as the inaugural edition. The winners will be crowned the Champion of the Mahindra Youth Football Challenge. The launch was announced by Mufaddal Choonia, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Strategy, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., along with Vivek B. Singh and P. N. Sankaran from Procam International.

This tournament is sponsored by Mahindra & Mahindra, who is the title sponsor, and partnered by the Celtic Football Club (Celtic FC). The radio partner for this event is 92.7 BIG FM. The event is being promoted and executed by Procam International.

Expressing his views on the second edition of the tournament, Raj Vaghasiya, Head - Football Vertical, Procam International said: "MYFC is a property of Procam International and Mahindra & Mahindra approached us to invest in the property. Celtic Football Club initiates activities to promote football from the grass root level and is a partner to the property."

MYFC involves the participation of 32 schools across six cities including Bangalore, Delhi, Goa, Kolkata and Mumbai. The first edition culminated with three footballers, Bishal Harizan and Jayanta Mondal from Kolkata and Mani Maran R. from Bangalore, being selected as winners by a panel of coaches from the Celtic Football Club. The inaugural edition of the MYFC was won by Sukantanagar Vidyaniketan School, Kolkata, while Govt. Sports School, Bangalore emerged as the runner-up. Mumbai, represented by Don Bosco in Matunga, was the champion school of Mumbai.

As told to EVENTFAQS earlier by Ajit R., VP - Innovation and Sales, Procam International: "The objective behind this initiative is to develop talent in the sport from the grass root level. This initiative is being heavily promoted on social networking sites such as Facebook. Big FM, being our radio partner, is promoting the initiative by publicising it on air and will organise an interview section with the coaches of the Celtic Football Club. There is an entire website which is dedicated to MYFC which will keep people posted about every match."

The winners had the opportunity to undergo 10 days of training at the Celtic Football Club, Scotland, where they also had a chance to watch a Scottish Premier League game at Celtic Park, and a match between Celtic FC vs. Glasgow Rangers at the Ibrox Stadium. Furthermore, their training involved multiple sessions of sports science testing, learning warm up techniques with the under-19 team, and daily coaching sessions with the Celtic FC under-15 team. This concluded with Mani Maran being selected to represent the Celtic FC under-16 team to play against the Monash Football Club from Melbourne, Australia.

Enhancements in the second year will include 25 boys being selected for the coaching clinic as against 22 in the first year. In addition, the three boys who travelled to Glasgow will also be invited for this coaching clinic to ensure that they get another opportunity to benefit from the specialized coaching. There will be growing involvement from Celtic FC, with the players benefiting in the form of kit and equipment.

Speaking about Celtic Football Club's association with MYFC, Peter Lowell, Chief Executive of Celtic Football Club said: "Celtic Football Club was delighted to host the three successful players during the past week at our youth academy. We are looking forward to another fantastic series of events over the next 12 months to ensure that the Mahindra Youth Football Challenge continues to grow as the youth football event in India."

The winning school of the second MYFC will receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 along with the winner's trophy, while the runner-up team will win a cash prize of Rs. 30,000 and a trophy. There will also be awards such as ‘Star Performer of the Game' and individual appreciation trophies for the ‘Best Striker', ‘Best Mid-fielder', ‘Best Defender' and ‘Best Goalkeeper'.

The tournament is being partnered by Celtic Football Club, and promoted and executed by Procam International.
