This initiative has evolved from an initiative of TNT employees in Asia in 2003. Over the past nine years, the event mobilized approximately one million participants and raised funds to feed over one lakh children in school for one year. This event saw people walking for hunger in 70 countries. The walk was a 24-hour relay with participants in each of the world's time zones, stretching from Auckland, New Zealand to Samoa, walking five kilometres. Actor, Shiv Pandit and Mihoko Tamamura, India Representative and Country Director, WFP participated in the walk in Mumbai. More than 100 people participated in the walk in Mumbai.
Commenting on the initiative, Abhik Mitra, Managing Director, TNT India said: "Hunger continues to be the greatest threat to health worldwide, killing a child every six seconds. We, at TNT, believe that it is our duty to fight hunger - a menace that threatens the basics of human existence."
Speaking about their association with TNT India, Mihoko Tamamura, India Representative and Country Director, WFP said, "Walk the World is an excellent example of how global partnerships can make a huge impact in the fight against hunger, and it was indeed heartening to see a huge turnout. This has reaffirmed our belief that we are not alone in our pursuit of rooting out under-nutrition from India. It is our privilege to work with our private sector partner, TNT along with the government, and we stand committed to reaching out to vulnerable communities who most need help."
