Present at the launch were Ashfaq Ahamed, Sr. Inspector of Motor Vehicles and President, All India Federation of Motor Vehicles Department Technical Executive Officer's Associations; Bharath Raj, Vice-President FMSCI; Darshan M, Managing Director & CEO, Machdar Motorsports; and Raj Bharath, i1 Supercar Series Driver.
Speaking on the occasion, Darshan M, MD & CEO, Machdar Motorsports said: "It gives me immense pleasure to announce the launch of ‘My i1 Day' across schools in the country. We are initiating the program keeping in mind the dates of the road safety week."
Over the course of four hours, school children will be educated about road safety measures and will be encouraged to adopt them in their day-to-day life. Scheduled to complete in about 45 days, the program aims to reach 327,000 kids across 654 schools in 100 cities and build awareness about road safety.
With the increasing popularity of motorsports in India, it is critical that children are educated on road safety and driving with precaution. "Machdar, being committed to keeping kids safe on and around the road, is now reaching out to schools to build awareness about road safety," added Darshan.
The program will be conducted in four sections. In the road safety section, a 10-minutes session for 25 school children per session will be conducted on adopting road safety measures. After this, the children will undergo a road safety test to receive the ‘i1 Super Series Driver's License' as a certificate. They will also receive an i1 branded sticker saying, "My Dad Drives Safe!" In the i1 Super Zone, children will be given information related to the i1 Supercar Series, covering the various components of the car, clothing options and helmet safety, different flags and their meanings, the pit area and pit stops, and the series format and scoring system. In the fourth section, the Graffiti Zone, a flex of an i1 car silhouette will be placed in the zone and the children can use crayons to colour inside the silhouette, which will be displayed at the i1 circuit during the race. A few of the children from these schools will also be selected to watch the i1 Super Series live.
Commenting on the campaign, Vicky Chandhok, President, FMSCI said: "The i1 Day is a great campaign initiated by Machdar Motorsports. It is in line with the FIA's objective to promote road safety and sustainability at all levels, in every country across the world. Our road cars have taken huge steps forward in terms of safety equipment, but both human driving behaviour and the roads themselves need to be improved drastically in our country. Road safety education for the young population is the way to go and schools are the ideal place to start creating this awareness of how important it is to be safe on our roads. The motorsport community has a huge role to play and the FMSCI is glad to support a great initiative like this."
"Being a motorsports driver, I understand the outcome of rash driving and definitely don't support it. Machdar Motorsports has taken an excellent step towards promoting road safety measures," added Raj Bharath, i1 Supercar Series driver.
